Our Projects

Arboretum & Learning Trail

The Arboretum and Learning Trail is located behind the Wheatley Recreation Complex in an area formerly used for community events like tractor pulls. Using ideas from the students at Wheatley and Area Public School, the Wheatley Horticultural Society has worked to transform this area into a multi-use recreation, conservation and educational space.  The Trail circles through an Arboretum, where native species, fruit trees and plants specifically chosen to enhance bird and pollinator habitat surround two cement pads where outdoor fitness equipment has been installed.

Heatherington Park
and Grant Bowman Trail

Since the reformation of the Wheatley Horticultural Society in 2017, Heatherington Park and Grant Bowman Trail have been a focus.  The trail was added in 2020, with funding from a CK Together Grant, the Chatham-Kent Trails Committee and contributions from the Dave Grant Memorial Fund. In 2018, the three pollinator focused flower beds were added with funding from the EDF Romney Community Fund. Many trees were added to Heatherington Park because of donations from Peanut Nurseries. Members have also shared shade perennials from their gardens for the shaded areas at the north end of the trail. Make sure to walk the trail often in the spring – the spring bulbs put on a show!

Downtown Beautification

Each year, the Wheatley Horticultural Society works with Moodys Flowers and DeGoeys Nursery and Flowers on planters and hanging baskets located in Wheatley’s Downtown. Our dedicated watering contractor maintains these plantings through the summer and fall. Funding for this project is provided by Chatham-Kent, and supplemented by the fundraising efforts of the Wheatley Horticultural Society, particularly the Fish Tub program, which adds both colour and funds to the project.

Fish Tubs

In addition to the standard planters in the downtown core, the Wheatley Horticultural Society embraces the fishing industry by planting close to 60 fish tubs each year and placing them on the bridge on the East side of town. These tubs are sponsored by businesses and families, and feature logos and in memorial information.

If you are interested in sponsoring a Fish Tote, please reach out by late February. New totes are $125.
